Download WordPress and Favorite Plugins in One Fell Swoop

Filed under: Uncategorized — Carthik @ 11:38 pm

WPZipper is one of those websites which I have thought of doing myself but never really got around to… Alright, well there is very little we all haven’t thought of and gone, “that would be so nifty!”.

What WPZipper does is pull your blog’s zipper to close shut.

Take 2: It is a service that provides a method for you to download one zip file with wordpress and all of your favorite plugins – plugins which you can select from a list. wpstar made it. I can think of a few small reasons I wouldn’t use it, based on the fact that unless you download it from wordpress.org, you can’t be sure it is the untainted, true, product, and that I might go over with the plugins I get. I manage my plugins, maintaining them at the bare minimum, and even for plugin-intensive blogs, it generally takes weeks to find the plugins I need and add them. But all this shouldn’t stop you from appreciating the effort behind the WPZipper service.

Did you know wordlog.com is using only the Akismet plugin at the moment? Now that’s what I mean by “bare minimum”. :)

Addendum: I must say I am also using the Automattic stats plugin now – so that makes it two plugins. D’oh.

  1. I wouldn’t call the stats plugin a plugin… well I almost wouldn’t.

Nice idea… I’d like a tool that would go over a install, note the plugins and allow one to make a package with an up to date wordpress and plugins. For those times you just want a clean install.

  2. Patrick – now that is a good idea too. The themes could be saved too. Well, actually, if you zip up the folder with WordPress in it, you have your backup, and can do a clean install.

I devised an evil method to have one mothership wordpress install and using subversion to fetch the source for all other blogs from this source. Wasn’t that bad at all. Then I made it simpler by just svn-ing plugins. Finally, I am down to using a minimal number of plugins – less than 10 in any case.

  9. Thanks for the post about wpZipper and I appreciate the comments.

You mentioned wanting to only get a copy of Wordpress from Wordpress.org and I completely understand your point. The main WP install zip on wpZipper is the same one you get from Wordpress.org–but, I’m not affiliated with WordPress, so I wouldn’t expect anyone to just take my word.

That’s why I also added the ability to download a ZIP of just the plugins you select, without WordPress. So you can download your own copy from Wordpress.org, if you so desire.

And for anyone wondering… themes are coming to wpZipper soon, as well as some other features that should hopefully make the site even more useful.

    I appreciate any feedback! Thanks!
