My apologies for the incorrectness in what I wrote. Sounds like Mark's solution works to duplicate the Drupal effort.

Yes, Richard, the new magpie code in WP is interesting, to say the least. I may get cracking on a couple of plugins that use the functions to do wicked stuff, later.

I downloaded a nightly version of Wordpress, and it includes the excellent MagpieRSS library, which, as far as I can tell, is used only for displaying the latest posts from wordpress.org in the Dashboard, but could conceivably be used by plugins to make an aggregator. MagpieRSS can take in Atom feeds as well as RSS, and there was talk of including it in Drupal's aggregator module, though I understand that would require a pretty major rewrite of a lot of the aggregator code.

Actually, it's not like that. Drupal has feed aggregator that can put content from any feed up on its page. (well, not atom, yet)

drupal.org 'subscribed' to 3 feeds and put the combined posts on the page you mentioned. These are feeds from Bryght and CivisSpace (kind of a sister projects) and the third is Feedster search feed for keyword "drupal", so it includes even people talking about drupal without linking to it. No pinging required.
