By the way I think that the easiest way to import large number of posts into WP is to break manualy MT's text file with exported blog.
For some reason I was not able to import to WP file of size over 1Mb. So I edited the file cut around half of it and paste to new file. Than import those two separate files into WP.
Thanks to that I did not have to use separate template in MT, rebuild the archives and so on.
Quick, easy and it worked for me fine

Another possibility is to edit php.ini and change the max. memory setting. I had trouble with a 2Mb file, even when split in half. I changed the value for memory_limit (being drastic, went straight for 100Mb instead of the default memory_limit = 8M) and it worked fine. Put the limit back down when I was done.
